Morocco! The Sahara Desert, the Berber tribes and Casablanca.

Sitting on the highest sand dune in the Sahara after riding camels through the dunes to see the sunset.

Monsieur Aussie thought he was Lawrence of Arabia while we were in Morocco.

Stopping to talk to semi-nomadic Berbers in the desert was pretty special. They showed us through their tents where they live for 6 months with their animals, then they move elsewhere in winter.

We were fascinated by the oases all along the valleys. Morocco is 70% desert and most of the desert is rocky and shaly rather than sandy.

Inside the Berber tent with a new mother. The tents are lined with berber carpets of course.

More of the Sahara Desert, the Draa Valley Oasis

This is the scenery you'll see for kilometres as you drive through the Sahara Desert. The towns blend in with the red soil/sand while some of the oases go for 80 miles.

The old colonial broken down buildings from French times fascinated me. They are all over Casablanca.

I hope you enjoyed these photos of Morocco. Of course there's plenty more, but this just gives you an idea if you haven't been there. Beg if you want to see more! I have some great medina shots but I haven't downloaded them yet. Maybe I'll do another post if there's any interest in this one. I think I wouldn't mind going again now I know what to expect.

I just found your blog and will come back to look at all your pictures. I have never been to Monet’s garden – don’t like to drive when I am in France, but need to get the train next time. I like your quote in your heading. I have always loved traveling – been in 50 countries so far, but not Australia yet, maybe next year. There is nothing like being on the road again.

I'm definitely interested in more!

All the red sand reminds me of St. George (USA), a small desert town in the far southwest corner of Utah USA--less than a thirty minute to drive into Arizona and also into Nevada. The hottest place I have ever lived. But beautiful red rock formations, and red dirt that was always seeping into our small house. Jen and I lived there from 2000 to 2004. That's where we were on 9/11, I talking to my son on the phone as we watched the towers crumble, Jen and I both staring at the TV.

The Sahara Desert, however, is flatter than St. George where there are buttes and what I would call very small mountains. Such deserts are hot, dry, and fascinating, though.

I especially like the pictures of you and Monsieur Aussie!! More of such photos too, please!!!

Diane: Yes, I'm sure it's still the same!

Vagabonde: Lovely to meet you. I hope you make it back. And I hope you make it to Australia!

Ann: Yes, I imagine from all the westerns I watched in my younger days that there are plenty of places in the US that look like parts of Morocco. Must have been tough living in it!
